On this day in 1803, United States took possession of the Louisiana area from France by paying a whopping sum of 15 million dollars.

The purchased area include; Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas,Oklahoma, and Nebraska, parts of Minnesota and Louisiana west of Mississippi River, including New Orleans, big parts of North and northeastern New Mexico, South Dakota, northern Texas, some parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado as well as portions of Canadian provinces Alberta and Saskatchewan.

After the deal was finalised, there was a simultaneous lowering of the French flag and raising of the American flag.
